A study from the New England Journal of Medicine showed patients who believed that their healthcare providers were not transparent about a medical error were more than five times as likely to consider a lawsuit compared to patients who believed that their healthcare providers were honest (65% vs. 12%).

In an investigation of the effectiveness of empathy training for skills related to breaking difficult news in healthcare, the number of participants who exhibited each of the 14 measured communication skill sets, including use of silence, naming emotions and expressing respect for the patient, increased across all skill sets by as much as 73%.

A study published in BMJ Quality and Safety found that healthcare providers who received social support after involvement in an adverse event had lower levels of anxiety and depression. Specifically, healthcare providers who received social support had a 60% reduction in symptoms of depression compared to those who did not receive support.
